catching up

so, here I sit shivering in northern california ... this camp has web access, so I'm taking the opportunity to catch up the photo's on this blog, but it's freezing out here!! Meanwhile, earlier today, I was driving in 107 degree weather! Go figure. Gotta pay quarters for 2.5 mins of shower time ... hope they have hot water!

I'm going to be hitting the Redwood forest tomorrow and high-tailing it into Oregon.

I'm beginning to think there is such a thing as too long of a drive *lol*

still in California!

the pacific coast highway is beautiful ... but slow

more california road

curvey, twisty, tight corners ... average speed = 20 mph!

another camp

it was almost perfect ... except for the bazzilion flies!

another friend

more southern cal coast

Southern California, Pacific Coast Line

Breakfast on the beach :)

Route 66 is a done deal!!!

check that off my bucket list!!

Busy making friends!

I was thinking of you, Darcy & Don, when I took these :)

I just know my sister, Darcy, and her huggy, Don, will get a great kick out of these pix

I kid you not - it was 120 degrees this day!

And with no a/c, I sat in the Colorado River rather than drive
And got my car stuck in the (unknown to me at the time) SOFT sand... thanks to strangers for towing me out of that fix!

does this never end?!

the famous town of Seligman

Two brothers here in this town began the Route 66 Association and put their town on the map. No one doing Route 66 would miss stopping here. It was lots of fun, but the food wasn't much to speak of :). Those are the *actual* bathrooms for the visitors to use *lol*

another smilie found

where I parked my tent the day I visited the Grand Canyon

All this for $10!

Day 11, Route 66 - another smilie

LOTS of strangers have been taking my picture *lol* ... not bad for someone as camera shy as I am!

Maps of the Mother Road along the Route

there were more, but these are the ones I thought to take a picture of

me and an old car on 66

the car is just sitting there at the side of the road ... waiting for people to take pictures of it ... so many fun (and funny) things along this route

who's that mystery shadow?

*giggle* ... I remind myself of a mystery dectective ... taken in the painted desert ... me and my shadow....

Petrified Forest

Where the trees were fosilized into stone ... I bought a tiny piece to bring home. The wood looks light, but weighs a lot!

Painted Desert

The camera simply doesn't capture the beauty of Arizona's painted desert!
It's vast and incredible and I had to talk myself out of going for a hike on the desert floor - mainly due to the heat and my fear that I'd lose my way because it would have been an impulsive hike (i.e., unprepared) .. and .. no shade!

Eagles song “Standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona”

I stood on a corner in Winslow Arizona, where the town has made the most of that Eagles tune :)

Day 10, Route 66 - new road rule

No more going off the beaten path at dusk!!
The top picture shows the gravel road (an early alignment of Route 66) and the bottom picture shows that same (long gravel road - went on for about 20 or 30 miles) after the sun set, with my headlights *on*. However, the sunset was beautiful.

out of touch

this past week I've either been out where there is no internet connection, or else where there is, it isn't strong enough to upload my pictures.

I'm safe, well, and dirty *lol* ... and will update this blog as soon as the internet cooperates!

I completed Route 66 and am just south of San Fransico driving up the pacific coast line and got to sleep on top of a mountain last night (which explains the 'dirty') with a gazzilion and 1 flies!

It's so nice to be out of the 100 degree weather!!!! that I don't care about the dirt! *lol*

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

at the end of a very long and hot (temps were over 100) day ... I indulged in staying at the Motel Safari for the night in Tucumcari, NM which began its days as "a rowdy railroad camp filled with saloons and outlaws" in 1901. :)

Notice the old fashioned styled radio next to the huge (king) bed ... what a difference from the night before *lol*

Take a look at the old styled phone sitting next to a flat screen tv!!

I reached the midpoint

but too late to eat at the cafe *lol*
